This page will give you more insight on the stance, either be positive or neggative, between the Jamestown and Powhatan People.
The Relationships
The Positive Relationship
The People of The new established Jamestown Colony and the People of the Powhatan Confederacy at first had a strong peaceful relationship. The two Peoples would trade Food from the Powhatan's, for copper or weapons from The English settlers. The English Primarily relied on receiving food from the Natives for survival. The English weren't very skilled hunters and they did not now the local wild game areas or hunting grounds. The Natives relied on the English for copper or weaponry, so they could hunt and keep the circle of trade moving with their new allies.
The Neggative Relationship
Conflict arose when the English demanded more land and started raiding Indian villages for supplies when the Natives had too high of trading prices. The Natives started attacking Colonials that would wander too far on the outskirts of Jamestown. This just heated the flames of conflict. The English and Powhatan stopped trading. Since the English had poor hunting skills, they went into a period called the "Starving Times." The English were forced to eat their livestock and work animals. Some reports have showed some English resorted to canibalism. During the harsh Virginia winters, many people died, and about only one out of ten people survived until help from the English sailing to the New World from Europe came. Durring this famine, the Natives were safe and sound because they were already tuned to the winters and hardships of life in the New World.
